Courses in
Philosophy prepare students for transfer to a baccalaureate institution for a
degree in Philosophy or a related discipline. As a profession, philosophy is
virtually limited to those who teach and write it. However, the emphasis placed
in Philosophy course work on development of critical thinking abilities
provides a sound foundation for a broad liberal arts education, valuable for
its own sake, as well as preparation for careers in related professional
humanistic or social disciplines. Philosophy courses serve as good preparation
for careers in data processing and information systems, the human services,
labor relations, law, library science, management, medicine, ministry, physical
sciences, politics and government, psychology, publishing, scientific research,
social work, and teaching. Specific career opportunities include archivist,
biographer, college administrator, consultant, cultural affairs officer,
religious activities director, etymologist, insurance agent/broker, lawyer,
librarian, manuscript reader, peace corp worker, pastoral assistant,
philologist, teacher/professor, and writer.
Transfer
Most career
opportunities in fields related to Philosophy require a B.A. or advanced
degree. Students can fulfill lower division General Education and major
requirements at College of San Mateo. See the Transfer Planning and Major
Preparation Recommendations sections of the catalog. Students should also
consult the catalog of the college or university to which they plan to
transfer.
