College of San Mateo Library

The 2007 selection for the One Book, One Community program is Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende. This novel was selected because its themes - immigration, cultural diversity and California history - are directly relevant to our community.

The following are special events that will be held at the College of San Mateo. Other events are also being held at other San Mateo County libraries.

"Daughter of Fortune" Book Discussion

Librarian David Gibbs will be leading a discussion of Daughter of Fortune. He will be leading us through the major themes of the book including immigration, gender roles, Gold Rush Era California and more.

Feel free to bring your own bag lunch to this lunch time event. Beverages will be provided to participants.

Araucaria - Dances of Chile

A music and dance event is coming to the College of San Mateo Theatre! Araucaria dance group, who have taken their name from the a native southern Chile tree, will be performing dances representative of the cold and rainy region of Southern Chile, the sunny and productive valleys in the central region, the festive Andes mountains, and the Easter Islands. The group will be showcasing the diversity of music and dance from Chile – homeland of the protagonist of Daughter of Fortune. [PROGRAM FLYER]
